Experience

Over a decade-plus in the field, the shape of the path has been less “planned career ladder” and more “learn whatever the problem in front of me demanded.” That turned out to be a strength: legacy enterprise systems, full-stack web apps, cloud-native microservices, and now AI/ML. Lately that instinct is pointed at developer experience -- bringing the same deterministic, testable rigor I’ve always brought to CI/CD to the newer, messier world of agentic AI tooling. Foundations

Technical Software Support — PLC Fire Safety Solutions · 2011–2014

This was the last of several co-op placements during my degree -- the one that turned into a full-time offer. Started as one of two developers building a web application in ASP.NET, C#, and MS SQL Server, while also keeping a foot in the company’s older world of COBOL, Fortran, and Visual Basic. As much a crash course in legacy software as in modern web development, and it set the pattern for everything after: learn the stack in front of you, whatever era it’s from.

Range & Scale

Software Engineer — Unique Solutions Ltd · 2014–2016

Joined a larger team building custom clothes-sizing software for a company competing globally with a database of over a million users. Picked up Ruby on Rails, AngularJS, and real infrastructure work here -- redesigning AWS deployments for greater scalability, and cutting a key transaction path from 900ms to 300ms through targeted performance testing. This is where “full-stack” started meaning frontend to infrastructure, not just frontend to backend.

Broadening the Toolkit

Web Developer — Henry Schein · 2016–2019

Built customer-facing tools on Node.js and React, including a prototype hardware-monitoring system for dental office equipment and an HTML5 notification system. Also got an early, hands-on introduction to applied AI here, evaluating NLP platforms and prototyping with IBM Watson Visual Recognition for automatic product classification -- years before “AI-driven development” became a résumé line item elsewhere.

Leading at Scale

Software Developer — IBM Canada · 2019–2020

Joined a large financial-services modernization project, leading a team building a React/Redux frontend against a Spring Boot backend while mentoring other developers and business analysts. Helped harden the platform’s microservices architecture with Docker, Kubernetes, and ElasticSearch, and automated CI/CD practices to cut down duplicated testing effort.

Tooling & Culture

Senior Full Stack Developer — Seddi · 2021

A short but dense stint building out Storybook as a visual testing framework and wiring it into the CI/CD pipeline and cloud infrastructure, alongside Kafka-based microservices work. Also spent real energy on the human side of engineering -- improving cross-timezone remote collaboration and championing mental health initiatives on the team.

Healthcare & Cloud

Software Developer III — Telus Health · 2022–2023

Modernized a legacy healthcare platform, migrating it from on-premises infrastructure to cloud-based microservices, and learned HL7 FHIR to handle secure, standards-compliant transmission of healthcare records. Regulated, high-stakes data in a domain where “move fast” has real limits -- a useful counterweight to earlier, faster-moving environments.

Going Independent

Freelance Software Developer — Self-Employed · 2023–2025

Went independent, architecting and delivering full-stack solutions and API integrations directly for clients -- building with Java, Node.js, and React, and owning everything from requirements gathering to deployment. Began winding the practice down in mid-2025 to return to school full-time -- which is where the story picks up next, in Education below.
